Magnetic Homesickness
Magnetic Homesickness is an exploration of the childhood home in which each room acts as a microcosm. The Structure can fold up into a 3-dimensional house, like origami, and is held together by magnets.
Alexia grew up in a town that has a lot of history dating back to the civil war. She interviewed many of her neighbors about their experiences with their homes, the role of each room, and how they feel in touch with its history. In many cases, she acquired documents written by previous occupants of specific houses, notably the diary of a woman who grew up in a house that used to be a speak easy called “Tumble Inn”. This project resulted in Alexia’s long-term interest in the imagination in relation to the spaces that we occupy. How they work together to influence the nature of our reality is a mystery, one which “Magnetic Homesickness” embraces as a form of magic.
